Review: Night of the Living Dead is probably most well known horror films of all time or at least one of the most known zombie flicks. To me the '68 version is one of the most essential horror films to any collection, now what we have here is the new blu-ray release of the Tom Savini directed remake. If you have the original DVD release of this film then you most likely already know that they made this remake mainly to obtain the rights to the Night of the Living Dead name. Many may say that this film was not necessary and they may be right, but in the end it was a damn good remake.
Alot of people on the internet have been tearing this release apart due to it looking darker than it did on all previous releases. They are right that it is alot darker, but after my viewing of it I actually liked it better. The reason for that is because it takes on a much more darker and ominous atmosphere. Some people I think will very much dig the change, of course the others will hate it and bitch and complain about it online.Anyone who has bought a release from Twilight Time before knows there is usually only a isolated soundtrack & a trailer as the bonus feature, but this time around they ported over the audio commentary w/ Tom Savini. That is an awesome thing for them to do because it is a great commentary.
Now as far as the actual film goes, well I really like it. It's one of the best remakes I have seen. Now it basically takes the same characters and plot and throws in a couple twists to keep it fresh. The biggest thing that you get that is unlike the original is that you get way more amazing gore and makeup effects. The other thing that stands out is the cas, you have 4 horror icons Tony Todd (Candyman/Hatchet), William Butler (Friday The 13th Part 7), Bill Moseley (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2) & Tom Towles (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer). Also you have Patricia Tallman (Army of Darkness), Katie Finneran (Wonderfalls), and Heather Mazur (Crash TV Series). The one thing I enjoyed is that the cast in the remake are very much likable. Each one did a great job at portraying the original characters and even improving on them, especially in the case Barbara. Patricia Tallman took the Barbara character and made her strong and way less annoying. She doesn't faint or freak out everytime a zombie appears, instead she grabs a gun and blasts them away!
Lets just say if you are a fan of this remake then you will love this release! Sadly it's all sold out and it is going for a good amount. As far as I know you can get on a waiting list if they get any returns, but you may be waiting awhile. Thanks once again Twilight Time for a blu-ray release I thought would never come or take way too long to be available!
