Another year has passed since the young girl Jamie had a terrifying encounter with her uncle Michael Myers. Now he is back on the prowl and once again wanting Jamie dead. After Jamie's encounter with her uncle she has formed a psychic bond with him. Will Jamie be able to survive the horror that surrounds her or will she finally succumb to Michael's blade?!
Review: This to me is the second to last good sequel in this franchise, the sixth film which I reviewed before is good as well but watch the producers cut. Also this was the last time that the legendary Donald Pleasence did his role as Dr. Loomis. The added twist of making the psychic connection of Jamie and Michael is pretty cool. It adds a little more to the story and takes on more of a supernatural edge to it. Supernatural is really the only way to describe Michael Myers especially when you look at all that has been done to him in this film as well as the other 3 before it he was in. It's very much like the way they went with the Friday The 13th franchise. Also they touch on the mark of the thorn which also ties into the supernatural atmosphere.
For the most part Halloween 5 sticks to being more serious, but does stray from time to time to break the tension. That is fine to a point, but there is this really odd part when Jamie's stepsister has to call the cops and when they show up this very goofy song plays and threw me off for a minute. Why they did that I will never know. The good news is that stuff like that doesn't happen often which is great. I prefer to be left in suspense and let the kill be the thing that breaks it.
The cast in this film actually is really quite annoying, especially the cops and teenagers. The only saving grace as far as the cast/characters goes is Donald Pleasence (Dr. Loomis), Beau Starr (Sheriff Meeker), Ellie Cornell (Rachel), and Danielle Harris (Jamie). To top it off those are the cast/characters that came returned from the previous film. The gore and violence that we get here is alot of off camera stuff that cuts away before it happens. In ways that's not a bad thing but by this time in the series I am ready to see it. Most of the gore is alot more simple wounds. Good gore would of made up for all the annoying characters in my opinion. One last thing I want to touch on is that it seems like the music score is not the original one, it sounds more like someone else trying to re-do it. I could be wrong, but that is just what I noticed.
The picture quality on this release is very good and is a definite upgrade from the DVD release they had come out a few years back. The detail is way better and the overall looks is fantastic. I think if your a fan of this flick and have not picked this one up yet you should go get it asap! Many places have it for under $10. Also you get some good special features to help round off this great release of Halloween 5. Special Features include:
